Only at the beginning of the 19th century were the oil lamps replaced by lime or gas lamps. This significantly increased the projection power, so that the light intensity was sufficient to present these images to a larger audience.

In addition to black-and-white images, color images were also presented. The small colorful pictures that were painted on a glass plate looked extremely natural. They can be seen as first slides.

The first video projectors, as we know them today, have their origin in the so-called Eidophorsystem. This was developed in the 1930s and first shown to thousands of spectators at the Summer Olympics in Berlin in 1936.

For the first time, spectators were able to experience the sporting spectacle up close on large screens. With the Eidophor system, it was possible for the first time to display moving images. We already presented this system and its principle of operation in a previous chapter.

Structure & functioning of a projector

The lighting unit

Normal metal halide lamps with a color temperature of around 5,200 Kelvin are used as the lighting unit. These lamps correspond to the brightness of daylight and can display colors true to the original. The advantage is that the lamp can generate the entire color spectrum with its white light.

The emitted portion of the light is reflected in the direction of an optical axis via a reflector as a concave mirror. The bundled light beams then arrive at a condenser lens, the task of fully illuminating the first Fresnel lens in front of an LCD unit.

As a result, the reproduction image is completely and uniformly bright up to the edges. Between the condenser lens and the first Fresnel lens, there is also a UV or IR filter, which largely reduces the ultraviolet and infrared components of the light.

This invisible part of the light is not required because it was previously not visible and would unnecessarily heat the LCD unit.

The LCD unit

The first Fresnel lens aligns the incident light rays in parallel to hit the LCD unit at right angles. The LCD can be called the heart of the projector since the actual projection image is also generated here. It is usually a transparent liquid crystal display.

However, a separate display is used for each basic color and combined into an image using a mirror system. By the way, the basic colors of a projector are red, blue, and green. The image passes through a second Fresnel lens and then hits the optics.

The look of a projector

The optics include a surface mirror, which is arranged at a 45-degree angle. This deflects the light rays with the projection image to the lens. The deflecting mirror has the advantage that the design of modern devices is kept quite compact.

The lens projects the image produced by the LCD unit onto the screen in a corresponding magnification. The focus or focus can be done either manually or motor-controlled.

The cooling

What types of beamers are there, and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

As we will see shortly, a projector is not just a projector. There are many different types on the market. We would like to introduce the most famous representatives here and thus bring a little clarity in the jungle of technical terms. A distinction is made between the following video projectors:

  • DLP projector,
  • LED projector,
  • Tube projector,
  • Eidophore system,
  • LCD projector,
  • LCoS projector and
  • Laser projector.

The DLP projector

The currently largest offer is the so-called DLP projector. The abbreviation DLP stands for Digital Light Processing. As already explained above, the image converter is the heart of a projector. A DMD is used for a DLP projector. This digital micromirror device is an integrated circuit that provides a tiny tiltable mirror for each pixel that can be displayed controlled by an electrical pulse. By specifically controlling these mirrors, the light is either directed into the projection optics or deflected directly.

As with a dual system, the mirrors can only assume the two states on or off. For this type of image generation, brightness gradations can only be achieved by quickly switching (pulsing) the tilting mirror. This is achieved by switching the tilting mirrors up to 5000 times in one second.

The generation of a color image from only two states is quite interesting. The manufacturers of DLP projectors use a fast rotating color wheel for this. The DMD can use this rotating color wheel to project all three basic colors, one after the other. Current DLP video projectors use a color wheel that has six or seven individual color segments. This allows the colors to be mixed even more precisely, leading to a better image result.

In addition to colored segments, some manufacturers also use a transparent segment in their color wheels for new DLP projectors. This should significantly increase the light output when rendering white areas. The disadvantage is that a separate transparent segment reduces the overall color light output. In this way, poor color rendering is achieved on very large projection surfaces.

High-performance DLP projectors are also used in the cinema. They have three separate DMD image converters and thus compensate for the disadvantages mentioned above. Later we come to the LED projectors, which can switch their colors electronically. The only company that currently provides DMD technology is the American company Texas Instruments.

Advantages of the DLP projector in one test

  • high speed,
  • no afterglow of the picture,
  • no burn-in of still images,
  • higher contrast than with an LCD projector,
  • Black is reproduced particularly vigorously,
  • hardly any pixel artifacts and
  • less sensitive to dust than LCD projectors because the optics are encapsulated.

Disadvantages of the DLP projector in one test

  • Rainbow effect, when the color wheel is not running fast,
  • optimal image resolution depends on the built-in mirror matrix,
  • individual colors can flicker,
  • not all colors are reproduced true to the original,
  • Color wheels with a transparent segment achieve a poorer color light output than LCD projectors and
  • higher noise level due to the color wheel and fan.

The LED projector

In a projector test 2020, test subjects also looked at LED projectors. With these video projectors, the image is still generated via a DLP element or, in newer models, via an LCD. LEDs are only used as light sources. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode and is one of the most popular electronic components for signal display.

The light output of LEDs is not particularly high, especially in the green area. Here the light wavelength only reaches between 540 and 610 nanometers. For this reason, LED projectors are also known as hybrid products among connoisseurs. To achieve a strong green, this color is not displayed with an LED, but with a laser diode. The colors themselves are formed by the sequential lighting of each individual LED.

Many LED video projectors have already replaced the previous DLP projectors. They are much more durable and can also be built with very small dimensions. LED projectors are the ideal solution for mobile applications, such as when it comes to visually supporting a business presentation. Another plus compared to other video projectors is the low heat development during operation.

Advantages of the LED projector in one test

  • LEDs are more energy-efficient than other projection lamps,
  • cooling is not necessary,
  • LED projectors can also be operated with a rechargeable battery due to the lower energy requirement,
  • the housing dimensions can be minimized,
  • the lifespan of LEDs is around 20,000 hours. Conventional lamps reach 4,000 hours and
  • a color wheel is not required for the color representation by the LEDs.

Disadvantages of the LED projector in one test

  • LCDs as image generators only achieve satisfactory image quality with fixed resolutions. The overall light output is lower than with other video projectors,
  • Due to a so-called decrease in the LEDs’ luminous flux, the image to be displayed can become constantly darker. Only an adaptive increase in current can compensate for the loss of brightness and rainbow effect since the primary colors are projected one after the other.

The tube projector

The so-called tube projectors were among the first commercially available video projectors. These projectors use traditional cathode-ray tubes for image display. These video projectors were still very large and heavy. Their tubes were aimed at a very high brightness so that a sufficient projection could take place.

The first devices with three lenses presented themselves optically. This was because a cathode ray tube was required for a color projection for each basic color. Each tube, therefore, had its lens. By superimposing the three projections, the color image could finally be viewed on a screen.

The brightness and resolution depend on the size of the cathode ray tube used. At the time, the sizes 7, 8, and 9 inches prevailed for projection tubes. Furthermore, a distinction was made between electrostatic (ES) and electromagnetic (EM) projectors about the best sharpness representation of the electron beam.

The 9-inch projectors with EM focus are still in use today. They are used in expensive flight simulators and also in high-end home cinema systems. The tube has not yet had its day here. The seven and 8-inch projectors, on the other hand, were often used in rear-projection televisions. Today, good used projectors of this type are rarely found.

Advantages of the tube projector in one test

  • Tube projectors can display all common resolutions such as NTSC, HD, Full-HD and 3D content,
  • the line-oriented representation of the tubes is much more natural compared to pixels,
  • there is no time delay so that videos with interlacing or interlacing can be played back without any problems,
  • the tubes themselves generate the required light so that no additional light sources are required,
  • the life of the tubes is around 10,000 hours and
  • Tubes achieve good black works and excellent contrasts up to 30,000: 1.

Disadvantages of the tube projector in one test

  • Tube projectors have only a low overall brightness so that the room must be darkened during playback,
  • the cathode ray tubes are sensitive to burn-in from still images and can darken in the affected areas,
  • the three color tubes and lenses have to be set in a complex manner so that mobile use is generally not possible,
  • Tube projectors are characterized by a heavyweight,
  • high ghosting effect in 3D rendering, because the tubes have a long decay time of certain phosphor types and
  • Devices are still very expensive, even when used.

The eidophore system

The so-called eidophore system is almost forgotten. It was developed in 1939 by Fritz Fischer, an engineer from Switzerland. It is the first method for the large-scale projection of television pictures. Eidophor is a Greek term and means something like an image carrier.

A xenon gas discharge lamp is used to generate light in the eidophoresystem. From there, the light is guided via a bar-shaped mirror to a concave mirror, which is part of a cathode ray tube. The concave mirror is provided with a thin oil film and is bombarded to different degrees by the tube’s electron beam.

At the same time, the oil layer changes and causes the light to deflect in the beam path. The light is reflected through the bar mirror and reaches an opposite collecting lens, representing the lens. As a result, a pixel is projected. To be able to display a color image, three parallel eidophore systems must be used.

The Eidpphor system was still in use until the end of the 1980s. The excellent image quality characterized it. This system was replaced by the tube projectors and later by the LCD and DLP projectors.

We do not need to go into the advantages and disadvantages here, because this old professional system is no longer used today.

The LCD projector

When we talk about an LCD projector, we mean a liquid crystal projector. They work much like a slide projector. But instead of a framed slide, several transparent active-matrix liquid crystal displays are used here. Thin-film transistors drive these.

To display color images, today’s LCD projectors use three independent LCD matrixes or 3LCD technology for short. In this way, any primary color can be displayed. The actual projection of the entire color image takes place via specially arranged, dichroic mirrors. For a brilliant reproduction, the individual colors are superimposed and not displayed side by side as in conventional LCD monitors.

High-quality LCD projectors use yet another LCD matrix. In addition to the basic colors red, green, and blue, there is also one for the bright display of the color yellow. In this way, a high luminous efficacy can be achieved and an extremely good color balance. For models with 3LCD technology, the basic display often shows a slight yellow tinge.

There are also LCD projectors with only one liquid display. The three primary colors are then displayed on three adjacent matrices. Unfortunately, this leads to poorer resolution.

Advantages of the LCD projector in one test

  • inexpensive,
  • due to the sharp delimitation of the pixels, texts and graphics are extremely sharp,
  • the small and light construction of the projector possible and
  • the better color intensity with the same light output than DLP projectors.

Disadvantages of the LCD projector in one test

  • Keystone or perspective corrections are difficult to carry out with LCD projectors since the LCD matrixes have a solid structure and would otherwise be blurred.
  • older LCDs are characterized by a streak effect,
  • Liquid crystals need a constant temperature and must not slip into the liquid phase,
  • a fan system is required and is usually annoying to hear during playback,
  • LCDs with organic liquid crystals tend to burn in (LCD memory effect), which can occur after only 1,000 hours of operation,
  • LCDs are sensitive to smoke and dust that can get inside through ventilation
  • incorrect convergence possible because color images of several LCD matrixes are projected overlaid.

The LCoS projector

Further development of the LCDs is the LCoStechnology. LCoS stands for Liquid Crystal on Silicon. This method also uses liquid crystal displays, but the LCDs are used in reflective mode. In contrast to DLP technology, there are various brand names from renowned electronics manufacturers on the market. Sony calls its process SXRD. Sanyo calls this technique D-ILA or DLA.

The projection itself is similar to that of a DLP projector. The liquid crystal displays are mounted on a reflector with control electronics underneath. The advantage is that the signal lines of an LCoS chip for controlling individual pixels are considerably shorter than with a conventional LCD. This also reduces the dreaded fly screen effect of LCD projectors. Overall, an LCoS projector achieves a higher contrast value and a very deep black area.

Advantages of the LCoS projector in one test

  • Projectors can be built compact
  • extremely sharp representation,
  • only slight loss of brightness and
  • very good black levels, similar to CRT monitors.

Disadvantages of the LCoS projector in one test

  • fixed resolution of the LCDs in the projector does not always ensure perfect picture quality,
  • Pictures can easily follow
  • there is also the LCD memory effect here and
  • the image and color quality may deteriorate as the operating time increases.

The laser projector

Laser projectors are designed for the professional market. These devices achieve their image composition via a quickly deflected and modulated laser beam. We can find two different structures here. There is laser display technology and grating light valve technology (GLV). Interestingly, these projectors’ lenses do not serve the image, but only to expand the light beam.

Laser display technology (LDT) was developed in Gera and Jena. Here the projection image is written line by line on the screen. As already mentioned, tube projectors also write the projection line by line onto a screen and thereby achieve a much better image quality. At the LDT, a special scanner with a facet mirror ensures a line structure, whereby a tilting mirror initiates the next line feed. The modulated laser beam can determine the correct brightness and color for each pixel. GLV technology is not quite as mature since the infamous speckle pattern can still occur.

The laser is pulsed in the pico-second range for almost perfect image reproduction. The viewer need not be afraid of the laser since appropriate safety mechanisms ensure unproblematic operation. Today these professional projectors with laser technology are used for flight simulators. This means that even curved projection surfaces can be used.

Advantages of laser projectors in one test

  • projection surfaces of any shape can be used,
  • focusing is not necessary
  • Laser projectors have a very high contrast range and
  • the basic colors are mixed with brilliant quality to form an overall picture.

Disadvantages of laser projectors in one test

  • there is only a limited light intensity available,
  • Laser class 4 for LDT and class 3R for GLV so that only trained personnel are allowed to operate these devices
  • without protection, there is a risk to eyesight.

Laser projectors can even create 3D holograms.

Power consumption and radiation of a projector

It is worth looking at the power consumption of a projector because, depending on the technology, projectors are considered large power consumers. However, one should when operating a projector with the power saving not overdo it. Frequent switching reduces the lifespan of the device.

Another variant would be the renunciation of presentations in full daylight, even if the projector to be technically capable. By darkening the lecture room, the light intensity of the beamer, and thus the risk to the lecturer, can be reduced.


Ongoing care and cleaning of a projector

To ensure excellent image reproduction, certain parts of the projector must be maintained consistently. However, this requires certain technical knowledge and skill. It is not always possible to tell whether a loss of quality can be remedied by cleaning or readjusting individual components.

Clean the filter

The easiest way to clean or replace the filter yourself. This process should not be neglected. The image intensity is not strong enough.

The projector (fan) is too loud.

After the projector has been in operation for a long time at home or in the office, the fan noise is suddenly perceived as much louder. Too little space around the fan slots increases the use of the fan. This error often occurs when you set up the projector on the bookshelf, for example. The distance to the books should be at least 20 centimeters here.

Since this set-up problem represents a standard situation, more expensive devices automatically recognize the inclined set-up and correct the trapezoid effect internally. And if both internal and external corrections are not sufficient: with a little skill, the screen can also be installed at an angle, which should further reduce the trapezoid effect.

With DLP devices, the error could also have occurred on the color wheel or in the color wheel control.

Strong pixel formation

If the distance between the device and the screen is small, errors in the pixel formation are particularly noticeable. A greater distance can help here. Extensive use of keystone correction also leads to increased pixel formation on the screen.

The picture flickers

You can also opt for an LED projector where you no longer have a lamp. The efficiency of these devices is extremely high, and they hardly need cooling. However, the technology is not yet so sophisticated that the brightness can be increased.

The air noise can be an enormous disruptive factor when presenting with the projector. The quieter the device, the smoother the presentation will be. Especially projectors with a low lamp output since less heat is generated and therefore has to be removed. The airflow in the housing also plays a major role.

The noise is generated by the fan and the airflow. The frequency of this noise is always dependent on the projector’s housing, which is why it would be exaggerated to say that you should use the manufacturer’s dB specifications as a guide. With some projectors, dB is also listed in the ECONOMY position of the insert lamp. With this value, you should always critically question whether the stated value can also be maintained with a series of devices.

Whether the projector should be mobile or stationary is up to you. However, the weight and dimensions of the device play a major role in this factor. The smaller the projector, the easier it can be used on the go. It should also be noted that when the beamer is transported, the technology can also suffer.

With frequent transport, an LCD projector is more advisable than a DLP projector because it contains numerous individual mirror bars. In most cases, projectors weigh between 2.5 and 6 kilograms.

When buying a projector, the projection size should always be considered. You should find a reasonable compromise between room size, resolution, and image size. With an LCD projector, pixel structures on a screen can be perceived as disturbing. You should also keep in mind that the brightness is reduced by four if the picture is twice as wide. You can easily calculate this – Divide the Ansi Lumen by the area of the canvas.

You should also consider formats with a projector. Most projectors have the usual formats of 1: 1, 2: 3, 3: 4 16: 9, 16:10, and 20: 9. For data to be displayed adequately with a projector, it requires a 4: 3 chip. Most standard devices already have such a chip. In some cases, there is also a 16:10 chip in the projector. If the PC has a different resolution than the projector, it must either be converted, or some pixels are simply not controlled.

The zoom does not replace the interchangeable lens on a projector. In most cases, the focal length ratio telephoto wide-angle is a factor of about 1: 1.2 or 1: 1.3. A motor zoom only rarely makes sense with a projector. Once this has been set, neither the zoom nor the sharpness changes.

However, many devices offer the option of digital zoom. This can be set using the remote control. Since the digital zoom is bad for image sharpness, a good lens with an optical zoom should be considered.

Analog signals, YC, and RGB input are also important aspects of a projector. You need a so-called coding technique so that your pictures can be displayed in color from the video. PAL’s color system uses a nesting of colors and brightness (C stands for chroma and Y for luminance).

The manufacturer’s service should also be carefully examined for the projector. This can be very diverse. Everything is possible, from on-site service to send in the device.

The air filters of a projector should be cleaned on average every 200 operating hours.

This can increase the life of the lamp. When servicing, you should always pay attention to the following factors: travel allowance, travel costs, and hourly rate.


The cost of a home cinema projector can vary widely. From 500 to 8000 euros, almost anything is possible with this device. How is the projector connected?
