It’s official: the number 48 has replaced the number 55. You couldn’t obtain an OLED TV smaller than 55 inches before LG released the world’s first commercially available 48-inch OLED set. Sony now has its own version.

Sony has embraced the reduced form factor, using thin bezels and a low pedestal stand to make the TV as small as possible. It does have a big enclosure affixed to the back (to hold the speakers, processing hardware, and connections), but it’s only visible when looking at the set from the side.

It lacks several next-gen HDMI functions, such as 4K@120Hz (HFR), VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM – effectively automated switching to the TV’s game mode when appropriate), which is disappointing – and somewhat surprising for such a cutting-edge TV. This is bad news for players who want to connect a PS5 or Xbox Series X to their TV.

However, that is about the only flaw we can identify with this television. Sony’s X1 Ultimate processor produces amazing visuals with tons of dark detail, and it supports pretty much every streaming service you could want. Motion control is still industry-leading, and there’s never been a finer TV at this size in terms of sharpness and detail. You will not be disappointed if you can come up with the bucks.

For several years, LG’s C-series model has been the best-selling OLED in the company’s lineup. It has always been the most cost-effective model, featuring the company’s best panel and image processing technology. Spending more money will bring you a prettier design and possibly better sound, but the picture quality will remain the same.

In 2021, however, this will not be the case. The C1 does not sport LG’s latest ‘OLED Evo’ display, which is brighter and sharper.

With so much focus on the enhanced G1, it’s maybe unsurprising that the C1 isn’t much of an enhancement over its predecessor, but there wasn’t much that needed to be improved in the first place. The picture quality and feature set were already excellent, but LG has improved the former significantly with its new Cinematic Movement motion processing and increased de-contouring tool (which minimizes banding), and the latter marginally with a better menu structure and a more comprehensive app selection.

The G1’s picture is undoubtedly superior in terms of brightness, clarity, and detail, but we’re not talking massive margins here, and most consumers will struggle to justify the extra $500, especially when considering the niche design and poorer sound.

In the end, the C1 is the better choice in terms of value for money. In fact, it’s one of the most highly recommended television shows on the market right now.

While Sony’s OLEDs are well-liked, it’s usually difficult to justify purchasing one over a rival LG. The Sony has a more genuine picture and better sound in the past, but it is also a step behind in terms of functionality and use – and it is at least a level or two more expensive.

But what if Sony could create a TV with most of those previously missing functions, a more enjoyable user experience, and a one-of-a-kind high-quality movie streaming app, all while improving picture and sound quality even further? With the A90J, the business has done exactly that.

In terms of performance, the Sony A90J is a knockout. It pushes OLED picture quality to new heights while keeping the unmistakable authenticity for which Sony is known. It also sounds far superior to any other television you might be considering. The new Google TV operating system ensures a better user experience than any Sony TV before 2021, and the exclusive Bravia Core streaming service is a true value-added feature.

Hardcore gamers may want to wait and see if the set supports VRR (an update has been promised but no date has been specified), and we found the 4K@120Hz support to be a little flaky. Can 4k and 8k replace the 3D TV?

In 2020, the high-resolution televisions with 4k and 8k resolution will focus at the CES in Las Vegas – the electronics fair that presents the worldwide television innovations every year. With the gigantic dimensions that the televisions have now adopted, this gives you a much more vivid picture and television life. But is it as plastic as 3D? No.

What is 3D TV?

3D TVs are devices that can display a spatial image. The normal television picture is only two-dimensional, while in addition to the length and the width, the depth of the display is added to the 3D television.

In this way, people also perceive their surroundings with their eyes. With a 3D television, the images look so plastic that you think you can touch the actors and objects. How is that possible?

Spatial vision

The fact that humans can enjoy a television picture in 3D is only because human eyes can reproduce an exact spatial image to deliver to the environment. There are not many living things that can do this. It is not for nothing that the sense of sight is the most important of the human senses.


How does spatial (or stereoscopic vision) work?

When a person looks at a certain point, both eyes are on it, but they provide slightly different images. These are guided through the optic nerve of the respective eye into the visual center of the brain. The two individual images are put together to form a single, spatial image of the surroundings.

The brain takes into account tiny differences between the two individual images and calculates the position, distance, and speed of the object under consideration fully automatically (in the subconscious).

The closer the object under consideration is, the greater the differences in the perspective of the right and left eyes. This leads to the fact that close objects appear very plastic, while the stereoscopic effect decreases with distant objects. The brain evaluates this information and learns how to estimate distances.

To do this, of course, it first has to gain experience. Stereoscopic vision must be acquired and is not innate. By the way, the learning effect also allows people to see their surroundings in 3D with just one eye. To do this, the brain processes the impressions of the one eye that can see and extrapolates them accordingly.


How does 3D TV work?

There are different types of 3D TVs, but they all use the same basic principle. The picture on a 3D television is just as two-dimensional as on an ordinary television receiver.

To give the brain the impression of spatial representation, the right, and left eye must be shown two separate images that differ slightly. Glasses are required for this. Depending on the method used, either passive polarized glasses (without their power supply) or active shutter glasses are used.

The slight differences between the two impressions are evaluated by the brain, and an image is created that does not differ from real stereoscopic vision.

If the images change faster than 24 times a second, the impression of a fluid movement arises because the brain can no longer distinguish between the individual images. There are even very few 3D TVs that create a spatial image without glasses. However, the technology is very complex and not yet fully developed. It has mainly been used for devices with a small display, such as high-quality smartphones or game consoles, which are designed for one or two viewers.

What types of 3D TVs are there?

In our 3D television comparison in 2020, we differentiate between devices with active and passive technology. A test is also carried out on 3D TVs where you do not need glasses.

3D TV with polarized glasses

This technology is also called passive 3D because the glasses required for viewing do not require their power source. Passive 3D works as follows:

The television broadcasts the images intended for the left and right eyes at the same time. It is emitted as so-called polarized light. Light can vibrate in any direction. But if it is polarized, it only vibrates in one direction. 3D televisions with polarized glasses make use of this effect. One lens only lets vertically polarized light through, the other only horizontally polarized. The television broadcasts the picture in lines. One line is polarized vertically, the other horizontally. With the polarizing glasses, you can only perceive the light for which the particular lens is translucent. In contrast, the light of the other polarization direction does not penetrate. As a result, you see separate images with slight differences with the left and right eyes, combined into a spatial image in the visual center.

3D TV with shutter glasses

This technology is also called active 3D because the glasses are involved in creating the spatial image and therefore require their power supply in the form of batteries. The principle of shutter glasses is completely different from that of polarized glasses. The lenses of the shutter glasses do not consist of glass, but liquid crystals. The 3D television alternately broadcasts a picture in Full HD for the right eye and then another picture in Full HD for the left eye. The processor in the glasses constantly switches the liquid crystals between translucent and opaque, so that each eye sees only the image sent for it. The glasses switch with a frequency of 120 Hertz, hence the active name 3D. It is so fast that it cannot be noticed by the human eye. The result is the same as with passive 3D: each eye sees an image with slight differences, and the visual center composes a spatial image from it.

This technology is still in its infancy and works according to the following principle: a thin layer of lenses, which have the shape of prisms, is applied to the display of the television. The light from the pixels is focused and directed precisely at the viewer’s left or right eye. Where the head is located is measured by a camera integrated into the 3D television.

The world’s first 3D television without glasses was launched in 2012 by Toshiba. However, the device was not a success because the 3D quality was only moderate, and the high purchase price deterred most customers. It is quite possible that 3D TVs without glasses will prevail in the future, but the technology is still at the very beginning.

In a 3D television test in 2020, various factors play a role that can help to make television in 3D either enjoyable or frustrating.


For a good 3D TV, the simple principle applies the bigger, the better. This means the screen diagonal. Experts from a test think that the optimal distance between the viewer and the television should be twice the diameter of the screen. If you are sitting approximately 2.5 to 3 meters from the television, a screen diagonal of 127 to 152 centimeters (50 – 60 inches) is optimal.


This criterion in a 3D television test means how sharp the television picture is in a practical test. To the naked eye, it appears as a homogeneous surface, but in reality, it is made up of many pixels called pixels. The more pixels an image has, the finer details can be recognized on it. With the Full HD resolution, the television picture consists of 1920 x 1080 pixels. That is just over 2 million pixels.

The first value in the name of the resolution indicates the number of columns in which the pixels are arranged. The second value stands for the number of rows. Some 3D TVs have Ultra HD resolution, sometimes called 4k. That is four times the resolution of Full HD, namely 3840 x 2160 pixels, with almost 8.3 million pixels.

Frame rate

The frame rate is also called the refresh rate. It is given in Hertz and indicates how many individual images the 3D television shows in a practical test per second. In the PAL standard used in Germany, the television shows 50 pictures per second. However, the frequency of 50 Hertz is far too low for 3D television because the images are shown alternately to the right and left eyes for technical reasons. This halves the refresh rate. If it turns out too low, flickering occurs (the old, jocular name for television set: flicker box). Looking at it for a long time can cause headaches. That’s why a 3D TV should have a frame rate of at least 100 Hertz. Higher frame rates are even better. The comparison winner in a 3D TV test 2020 even has a frame rate of 400 Hertz. This means that the device emitted 400 individual images per second in a practical test. With such a high frequency, even fast movements appear very fluid, and annoying jerking is a thing of the past.

Receiving part

The receiving part is also called tuner in television technology. There are three types of tuners:

  • DVB-S2 tuner
  • DVB-T2 tuner
  • DVB-C tuner

For some time now, television signals have only been broadcast digitally. The abbreviation DVB stands for digital video broadcasting. The letter S2 denotes second-generation satellite television, T2 stands for second-generation terrestrial television (broadcast by transmission towers), and C for cable – cable television.

Most 3D TVs in a practical test have an integrated receiver for satellite TV. This allows you to connect the TV directly to the satellite antenna output, and extra tuner is unnecessary. However, if you receive your television signal via cable, the situation is a little different. Most cable companies send their signals encrypted. To receive them, you have to rent or buy a receiver (tuner) from the company concerned.

In contrast, the DVB-T2 category’s television signals can be received free of charge in the majority of cases. Also, almost all tuners today have a so-called CI + slot. This is a slot for a card that you can use to receive pay-TV, for example.

Connection to the internet

This criterion is very important for a 3D television because it expands the possible uses considerably. All devices were connected to the Internet in a test either via WLAN or via Ethernet. This is another name for LAN, Internet access using a cable.

If your 3D TV is close to the WLAN router and a direct cable connection is possible, you should prefer it. The connection via cable is not only faster but also less susceptible to faults. Receiver part / tuner
